Itinerary
Day 1
Full Day
In your tourist adventure, you will meet moais, stone giants that average 13 feet (4 meters) tall and weigh 14 tons (13 metric tons). They are said to represent ancestral spirits or preeminent tribal figures, some moai are placed in ahu or ceremonial sites.
After pick-up at the hotel, your guide will take you to Ahu Akahanga, located on the southeast coast of the island. Unlike most Ahu, Akahanga has not been restored, allowing it to stumble into the area as European explorers did for the first time. The platform, about 59 feet (18 meters) long, originally contained about a dozen moai and is believed to be the burial site of the Polynesian king Hoto Matu'a.
Walk the moai-filled grounds that have pukao, decorative knots on the head, and tribal fights provide an explanation for this curious scene.
Next, head north along the coast to Ahu Tongariki, the largest ceremonial site with an impressive row of 15 vertical moai. Learn how a tsunami in 1960 sent these statues, some weighing 30 tons (27 metric tons), flying several hundred feet inland. The restoration of this site took five years and was completed in 1992.
Then he traveled inland to Rano Raraku, where on his volcanic slopes the sculptors of Rapa Nui had carved moai of volcanic stone before moving about a third of them to several ahu. Many of the island's more than 800 moai remain in the quarry and nearby.
As you walk with your guide to the stone pit, you will see hundreds of moai heads or partially buried torsos poking from the grassy ground.
Enjoy a barbecue lunch (included) in a nearby camp area, which includes chicken and other meats, fish, salad, rice, fruit and water. A vegetarian option can be organized upon request.
You will spend approximately 2.5 hours in total at Rano Raraku with lunch time.
Along the north coast, reach your last stop in Anakena and explore the seven extremely well preserved moai of Ahu Nau Nau, four of them with pukao. On this site, archaeologists located an almost complete coral eye, encrusted with red volcanic slag stone.
Your complete tourist visit, swim or stroll through Anakena, one of the few white-sand beaches on the island, for about 30 minutes before being transported back to your hotel. Or feel free to stay longer, and your guide will organize a taxi ride for you (on your own) when you are ready to return to your accommodation. Changing rooms with showers are available on site for a small fee.
