At 9:30 am We will take a boat tour of the lake visiting the surrounding villages:
San Juan La Laguna : It is special that the inhabitants (known as Tz'tujiles) take pride in their craft traditions, particularly painting and weaving, and have developed their own tourism and infrastructure to highlight these traditions to visitors. Perhaps part of what makes everything work so well is the community spirit, coffee farmers, fishermen, organic farmers, natural dry cleaners and widows are among the like-minded groups that have formed cooperatives here.
San Pedro la Laguna: 20-minute break
Santiago Atitlán : Across the lake from Panajachel, at an entrance between the volcanoes of Tolimán and San Pedro, is Santiago Atitlán, the largest of the lake's communities, with a strong indigenous identity. Many Atitecos (as their people are known) proudly adhere to the traditional Mayan tz'utujil lifestyle. Women wear purple striped skirts and huipiles embroidered with colorful birds and flowers, while older men still wear lavender or maroon striped embroidered pants. The city's brotherhoods maintain the syncretic traditions and rituals of Mayan Catholicism. Here there is also a wide variety of crafts. This is the home of Maximón, who moves into a new home on May 8 (after Easter) . The rest of the year, Maximón lives with a caretaker and receives offerings. He changes houses every year.
